ASIATIC LION – GIR LION SANCTUARY

  • Gir – Located in Sasan village in Junagadh district of  Gujarat. Gir National park is known for its wild life sanctuary for Asiatic lions. It is the only home in Asia for Asiatic lion population. We can reach Gir National park via road from Somnath or Junagadh. The Closest Airport for Gir National park is Bhavnagar. It has about 540 Lion populaton. We can spot several other animals apart from Asiatic lions in Gir Like Hyenas, Leopards, indian Monitor lizard, Antelopes, Cheetal and deers etc.

Gir National park is the last refuge of Asiatic lion in India. By the efforts of the Forest department, they have succeeded in increasing the population of this majestic animal. Just the problem lies between the locals, since there are several villages spread across the Gir National park which has an area of about 1400 Sq kilometers. Still the land for grazing animals is shrinking, and turning into dry areas. This makes often lions to come to villages for food and water.
